“Friends and family, this part is for you. What if instead of cutesy but mostly unused baby items from Target, we gifted mothers with so many hours of care from a local postpartum doula? Not sure if you could swing that by yourself? Why not go in with a group of friends or family? This is a gift that makes a difference and contributes to the health, happiness, and mental well-being of a postpartum mom, which then contributes to the health, happiness, and mental well-being of an entire family. That’s a pretty amazing gift.”

Importance of Responsive Feeding • KellyMom.com
“However, society continues to sell us the myth that babies should start sleeping through the night after the first few weeks, and that getting them to this stage is an achievement. Aside from evidence to the contrary, given that around a third of adults report at least mild insomnia, should we really believe that babies who cannot meet their own needs if they wake should be able to sleep all night? How many adults when they wake have a drink of water?
“Waking at night is also thought to be protective. Babies want to be close to their mother at night and sleeping close to them helps babies maintain their temperature28, heart rate29 and have steadier breathing30. Sleeping too deeply may be a risk factor for SIDS. Babies who have died of SIDS are more likely to have longer periods of uninterrupted sleep and moved about less in their sleep.”

Science Update: Delayed cord clamping may benefit infant brain development, NIH-funded study finds
“By 4 months of age, the brains of infants in the study who underwent delayed clamping had more myelin, a brain-insulating material, compared to those whose cords were clamped within 20 seconds. Myelin, which accelerates communication in the brain, is produced by iron-dependent brain cells.”

Supporting a Breastfeeding Mother – La Leche League GB
“New parents need time to adjust to their new roles. Life may change dramatically, especially for a first time mother—many women say they didn’t feel prepared for the emotional upheaval they experienced on becoming a mum. Even experienced mothers can have difficulties juggling the needs of the new baby with those of older children. At this time a pair of practical helping hands can make a big difference by allowing a mother time to recover from the birth and establish breastfeeding.”
