What is a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist?
A Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) is a professional who has undergone specialized training to support and assist mothers in their breastfeeding journey. As a CBS, I can support families through pregnancy, breastfeeding initiation, and the normal course of lactation, counsel families through non-complicated breastfeeding challenges, and refer them on to the proper professionals for more complex issues.
Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) is the specific credential issued by Lactation Education Resources (LER) for lactation support professionals. LER is one of the few lactation education programs recognized and approved by the Lactation Education Accreditation and Approval Review Committee (LEAARC).
As a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist, I support breastfeeding families by:
• Instructing and guiding mothers (and partners) in optimal feeding positions, latch, frequency and duration of feedings, and parameters for infant output.
• Conducting an assessment of infant and/or mother and devising a plan of care in uncomplicated breastfeeding situations.
• Assessing effective feeding and milk transfer in uncomplicated breastfeeding situations.
• Providing information and anticipatory guidance to families.
• Instructing parents of preterm infants in establishing and maintaining a milk supply.
• Counseling employed breastfeeding mothers regarding selection of a breast pump, maintaining milk supply, and/or breastmilk storage.
• Working collaboratively within the health care team and referring clients to the appropriate health care provider (IBCLC, physician, or other practitioner) for assessment and treatment as needed.
