“Obstetricians trained since the 1980s have no memory of maternity floors before the fetal monitor. Although their professional organization, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has issued periodic bulletins since 1979 advising that the fetal monitor does not appear to be useful in low-risk pregnancies, that interpreting monitor strips correctly “is not an easy matter,” and that universal reliance on the monitor has led to an unnecessary increase in caesareans, the monitor remains in near-universal use in American hospitals, even for low-risk births.”
